Upon the (hopefully) last hills of Asia
We cycled the same way back which we came from Lampang. Either it was that we were recovered or the way back was a bit easier – we were a bit quicker than the other way. In Lampang we went to the same guesthouse, unfortunately, we had a less nice room… This time we were visited by an army of giant ants (not joking!), our smoking spiral made quite a massacre. 😀
Then we proceeded to Thoen where we met a Belgian couple who just started cycling through the world. It made us a bit sentimental. 🙂 The next morning we also met a Dutch cyclist who warned us to make a reservation for Sukothai as there would be a festival at the moment. While we were thinking that the light festival should only be around 25 November (it was 22…) we didn’t take his recommendation too serious.
We had only decided to cycle directly to Sukothai that morning as we had only read about its historical park to be a must that morning. We almost regretted our decision when the first 50 km were mostly uphill… But when we reached Sukothai we were glad about it. Although there was a lot going on and suddenly a wild mass of tourists appeared, we were instantly in awe for the monuments of the historic park.
In the evening we went to see the festival in details and had to state that in Thailand the light festival is celebrated in a more ample way than in Laos. Nearly the whole area was full of food and vending stalls, lights and candles and lampions, performances and music. Once again we felt reminded of a very warm Christmas. 😉
On our second evening we saw the Belgians again, also we ran into Roger and Silvia, again. Roger mentioned that he somehow thought we would meet here again, but we didn’t dare to hope so. 😀 Once again we went to see the celebrations together and then we finally had to really say goodbye. Until the next time, of course. 😉
